Before I announce the winner of a Cecil Murphey Scholarship to She Speaks, I would like to say a few words to all who entered.

First, I am so proud of each of you.  Proud?  How can I be proud of someone I don't know?  Somehow, God allows me to love you like a sister without knowing you.  And as your sister, I'm proud you had the guts to put your writing on the line like you did.  Writing and submitting isn't for the faint of heart.  For some, it was the boldest thing you've ever done.  I recognize and honor that.

Second, every submission we received had potential.  Every. One.  Do not ever let anyone tell you otherwise.  We saw your passion, your creativeness, your humor, your sensitivity, your depth of spiritual insight and your love for Jesus.  Writing is a craft that can be learned.  And every writer is somewhere on the continuum of learning.  Keep working hard and developing your writing skills.  We'll help.  We believe in you.

And third, even if you didn't win, there are a few more chances to win a scholarship.  I'll tell you how at the end of this post.  So, without any further delay, I'm happy to announce the first-place winner:

Ellen Stevens    "Raising Prophets"

Ellen's article will be featured in the July issue of the P31 Woman magazine, just in time for She Speaks - which she will be attending thanks to Cecil Murphey's generosity.  Get your hankies ready when you read it.

We selected second and third place winners in case Ellen is unable to attend the conference this year. They will be published this summer in the P31 Woman magazine.  They are:

2 - Lisha Hunnicutt  "Carving with the Master"
3 - Lori Hatcher "I Love You You're Looking Good"

There were also a number of articles that were selected as honorable mentions, and will be published either in the magazine or online at Everyday Life.  They are listed in alpha order.

Deborah Beauchamp  "Sunday After Sunday"
Kelli Combs "Lessons from a Momma Raccoon"
Cheryl Fellores  "untitled"
Debbie Graham "untitled"  (about son)
Nyla Gutekunst  "Reversing Roles"
Verbie Ann Helyger  "Relating to Singleness"
Jessica Kirkland  "Expect God's Radical Provision"
Karen Lembo  "What's Cooking in your Thought Life"
Jennifer Tubbiolo "Cleaning my House for an Aunt Who Never Visits"
Kori Yates "Blue-Haired Legacy"

There was one other article selected, but due to privacy issues it will be published anonymously, and so isn't listed. If your name is on this post, you should hear from the reviewer who first selected your article, then you'll hear from me in the next week to schedule your article.

Thank you again to everyone who entered.  I'm praying the Lord blesses you in many ways.  And please try again.

We've got scholarships to give away!!!

Have you felt God's call on your life to minister to others through writing, speaking or leading a women's ministry? If so, She Speaks is the one conference you don't want to miss. This year, She Speaks is July 22-24 in Concord North Carolina.  To read about this year's conference, click here.

Registration went live two weeks, and we already have 170 women registered! It's going to be a life-changing weekend.

But this post isn't just to announce that registration is open. Oh no, there's so much more! I have the honor, privilege and joy to give away one full-paid scholarship. Before I give you the details, I want to recognize and honor the man who is donating the scholarship: Cecil Murphey.

Cecil is the author and co-author of over 100 books, he pours his life into ministering to others through his writing and by mentoring writers. Please visit his site to learn more: http://www.cecilmurphey.com/. Cec also sends out great writing tips and advice through his writer's blog: http://www.cecmurpheyswritertowriter.blogspot.com/. Please take a few minutes and learn more about Cecil Murphey (and his awesome assistant Twila Belk who is a P31 supporter and will be at She Speaks this year ... we love this lady!).

Here's what the scholarship includes:
  • A packed schedule.
  • 2 nights in the hotel, based on double occupancy (sharing a room with another attendee).
  • All conference meals and material.
  • Free Internet service in the room.

What's not included:

• Transportation to the event
• Extra nights
• Private room
• Pre-conference seminars

How to win:

Since I get to choose the winner and the conditions for this scholarship, I've decided to hold a writing contest. To enter, all you have to do is submit an article that would be suitable for publishing in the P31 Woman magazine. You can read the writer's guidelines here. Submissions must adhere to our word limit of 1000 words.

You'll have until Friday, March 25th at midnight PST, to submit your article. Then, we will take a week to review them and announce the winner on April 1st on my blog. To submit, please send them to Janet Burke, my assistant editor, at Janet@Proverbs31.org.  The winning submission will also be printed in the magazine, as well as some honorable mentions.

Some other rules:

• Submit only one article.
• Please don't send a link to a blog post.
• Put your submission in a Word document or pasted into the body of an email.
• A word of advice, very few blog posts translate well into magazine articles. Please make sure your submission follows standard magazine style.
• Read some of our archived feature articles to get a feel for our style.

If writing isn't your thing, we've got other scholarships to give away. Visit Lysa TerKeurst's blog to find out who is else is holding a contest.

And finally, we'll send out a confirmation email when we receive your article. If you have any questions, please ask Janet as I'll be with my family on a Spring Break vacation through March 19th.  Or hold your questions and ask me after that.

 Happy Writing!!

First, a sincere "Thank You!" to all our veteran's today.  I appreciate my American freedoms even more knowing it came at the cost of your sacrifices.  May God bless you all.  If you know a veteran, take the time today to call or send a note of thanks.

*****************************************************************************

Recently I developed a new class for writers, called "Ten Ways to Sabotage Your Writing."  It came about after years of rejecting approximately 95% of the articles submitted to the P31 Woman magazine.  Not all of these articles had poor sentence construction or improper grammar.  Some were technically well-written.  So why were we rejecting so many?

Figuring there had to be commonalities that killed a piece, I started to dissect the weaker points of articles.  Hence the new class.

If you are interested in the class, I'll be teaching it at the opening writer's session at She Speaks next year.  Registration should start in January, so check back with me and I'll announce it.  Or visit www.SheSpeaksConference.com in January.   After that, we'll offer it as a webinar.

Coming up with labels for these saboteurs proved challenging.  After developing what I thought was a creative title for the talk, the subtitles fell flat.  Boring.  It brought to the surface one of my personal limitations:  I'm a concrete thinker.

Being a concrete thinker is helpful in certain settings.  It's why categorizing and organization comes naturally.  It's how I can help an author focus on a main point, and eliminate distractions in writing. It's also why titles trip me up every time.  Titles require the author to fnd a quirky play on words, double entendres or be daring enough to attract attention.

Yep ... not me.

Every once in awhile I stumble on a charming, delightfully intriguing title, and you would think it was Christmas morning!

And so ... somehow getting back to one of my main points ... (rambling is allowed in blogs) ... one of the ways writers sabotage writing is to start sentences with too many pronouns, especially "I."  This is common when writing a first-person article.  Here's an example:

Old: I know that I am not perfect and complete yet, but at least I’m now walking in the right direction.

My rewrite: Perfection is a future hope. For now, at least I’m on the right path.

The title of this sub-point in my talk is:  Frequently write with pronouns

Yawn ...

However, today, on VisualThesaurus.com (my new writing best friend), author Michael Lydon posted an article with the perfect title for this writing problem!  Brilliant.  Concise.  He calls it:  Narcissism.

Since you can not copyright a title, I'm going to borrow this word for my talk.  So if you show up at She Speaks 2011, and hear that my second tip is "Narcissistic Writing," you'll smile and know you heard it first here.

And hence my two final writing tips:
  1. Read as much as you can on the craft of writing.
  2. Admit your weakness and get help from your more abstract-thinking friends.
And of course, plan now to attend She Speaks to hear the rest of my tips.  Hopefully by then they will all have better titles.

Glynnis

When my son Josh was in junior high, he took guitar lessons.  He had played bass guitar for three years, but wanted to expand his skills.

Josh has a laid-back personality, which made him a joy to raise.  But that relaxed attitude wasn't sitting well with his guitar teacher.   This teacher was a professional musician with high standards.  Rightly so.  He was one of the best, and expected a good effort from his students.

But his style clashed with Josh's personality, and the teacher was often frustrated because Josh hadn't practiced enough to master whatever skill had been taught the week before.  Very soon we realized it wasn't the best fit for Josh at that time.  Although Josh wanted to play guitar, the truth was he wasn't putting forth much effort.

At one of our last appointments, the teacher spoke with me privately.  He knew we were Christians, and he was too.  He shared his personal frustration about the Christian youth he had taught:

"Sadly, the people who have most reason to pursue playing with excellence, don't."

I've never forgotten that statement.  He was right.  I didn't agree with his generalized negative observation - I'd seen plenty of musicians offering their best.  My son did have potential and became a wonderful guitar player and worship leader for the youth of our church.

But I agreed with him about Christians having the best reason for pursuing excellence.

As Christians, the Bible tells us that whatever we do, whether it be making dinner, cleaning the bathroom, going to school, or serving in ministry .... whatever we do .... we are to do it as if for the Lord.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Colossians 3:23-24)
I thought about that teacher because I'm teaching some conference calls on writing to She Speaks graduates.  These women are pursuing excellence in their writing.  They are investing money and time in the calling God has put on their lives.  They are taking hold of the vision God placed on their heart and are going for it.  With passion and abandon.  I'm so proud of them.

In two weeks, our speaking conference calls begin, and many of those same women have signed up for those.  In case you didn't attend She Speaks, or are looking for a way to invest in your own speaking ministry, I also want to share an ongoing service that P31 is offering for speakers.  It's called the Next Step Speaker Services.  Amy Carroll and Karen Ehman are offering a speaking critique service for an affordable price. They can help you with:

• Message Development

• Message Evaluation
• Creating Compelling Marketing
• Ministry Organization

They just started it a few months ago, and we are all trying to help spread the word.  This is a way you can pursue excellence in your call to speak.
Even if you don't want to invest any money right now, visit the Next Step Speaker Services website for informative articles on speaking and a free weekly speaking tip.

What passion has God put on your heart?    And how are you pursuing excellence in it?

Feel free to use this blog as a place to declare your intent to offer your best to the One who deserves it.

I'm home from She Speaks 2010.  I'm physically tired, emotionally exhausted and yet filled with overwhelming joy.  I wonder if this is what Moses felt like after being in the presence of God.  I just can't stop smiling.

Somehow, through the desperate prayers and humble offerings of a bunch of ordinary women, the Embassy Suites in Concord, North Carolina got transformed into holy ground for three amazing days.

First and foremost, I want to give God all the glory and honor He deserves for what He did.  He is always faithful, always kind, always grace-filled and always generous.  He invaded that place with His presence, and changed us.

Even though this was the 10th anniversary (and I've been at all of them), I'm always amazed at what God does.  I'm not surprised - because He's never failed us.  But I think He delights in amazing me.

So I thought I would do a Top Ten list of my experience at She Speaks this year.   Except for number one, these are not in any order. Here goes:

10.  Interacting with incredible publishers, agents and authors who gave generously of their time, energy and expertise to extend a hand to women who feel called to write.

9.  Giving LeAnn Rice a standing ovation for all she did to make She Speaks happen. She was probably embarrassed by the attention, but she deserved it.

8.  Karen Ehman's dog vs. cat example on Sunday morning.  "Let's all be dogs!  (pant, pant, pant)

7.  Hearing Cecil Murphey's reminder that God is sovereign and works in spite of man's rejection.  What delightful hope.

6.  Meeting a woman, recently divorced, who came to She Speaks wondering if God could ever use her in ministry again.  She got her answer after hearing Cheri Keaggy and Angela Thomas minister from the main stage.  We serve a redeeming God!

5.  Having the help of some beautiful women and young ladies to make the writer's track such a success.  Thanks to:   Danita, Sheila, Michelle, Kristen, Lauren, Ashley, Ramona, Julie & Ariel.   Thank you for serving with such servants' hearts, with graciousness and love.

4.  Watching the staff, speaker team, and  volunteers of Proverbs 31 Ministries in glorious action both before, during and after.  I've NEVER met any group of women more loving and devoted to Christ and each other. I love us!   (to quote Marybeth)

3.  Lysa's challenge to consider how our reactions affect our reach.  I know I want a God-sized reach, and need to pay more attention to my reactions.

2.  Meeting so many sisters who love God Word and love conveying God's truth through words.

1.   Somehow with over 650 women in attendance (I'm including volunteers), God spoke to each one of us  as if we were the only one there.

If you couldn't make it to She Speaks this year, please pray about joining us next year.  If you haven't already signed up to receive my posts, please do so and I'll let you know when registration is open.  It will probably be January or February 2011.

If you have a memory to share, or a praise, please post a comment.

I'm going to announce a winner of the Beehive Apron today, but I'll do that at the end of the post.

Before that, I want to share an insight I've had recently regarding establishing a platform for ministry - specifically a book writing ministry.

Next week I leave for She Speaks.  It truly is the highlight of my year.  If you don't know about it, please read more here.  It's for women who are called into some kind of writing, speaking or women's ministry.   This can be leading a neighborhood Bible study to speaking in arenas with thousands of people.  Or from writing a history of your life for grandchildren to writing a book.  And I get to direct the writer's track.  I still kind of pinch myself that God lets me do this.  I have so much fun while helping to equip women to advance God's kingdom.  Recently I read a passage that has application in this setting.

In my daily Bible reading I came across a passage I never remember reading.  Maybe that's because I haven't spent a lot of time in 1 Kings.  But tucked in the middle of chapter 20 read these words:
"The king of Israel answered, 'Tell him: 'One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off'.''"   (1 Kings 20:11 NIV)
Beside the fact that I've never had to write a sentence with two sets of single quotes inside it, this passage has an amazing truth  relevant to a challenge many authors face today.   And that's establishing a platform for selling books, and convincing a publisher it's enough to warrant a publishing contract.

Getting a book published is harder than ever.  There's a bottom line for 95% of all authors (specifically non-fiction):  You need to have avenues for selling your own book. It can't all fall to the publisher, because traditional book-selling avenues (Christian bookstores) are struggling.  So, publishers need authors who have a platform.   It's a partnership.

But establishing a platform is a challenge for an author.  It takes years to establish a good network of connections.  A blog following.  Speaking and teaching opportunities.  Newsletter subscribers.  Or build a ministry from the ground up.  Yet it only takes a few weeks or months to write a book proposal.

When I read this verse, it reminded me that it's easy to write about what you WILL DO in establishing a platform.  It's easy to have big plans.  It's fun to talk about your vision.  It's much harder to actually do the work, week after week, month after month, to establish that platform.

I write from personal experience.  I'm trained as a writer, so that's where I've always started.   However, today's writing climate actually reflects a truth I've learned about being a Christian:  Your insides have to match your outsides.

This verse calls me back to a place of truth.  A place of digging in to the work God has called me to before I write about it.  Words spoken by Ahab king of Israel thousands of years ago, speak to me today:   "One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off."

Now, I have chosen a winner for the cute beehive apron.  Normally, I just pick a number at random and that's the winner.  But when I read that Melissa is a beekeeper with four hives, I knew she needed this apron.  Melissa- I didn't see an email address or way to contact you.  Please send me an email at editor@proverbs31.org.    If I don't hear from Melissa by next week, I'll pick another winner.

May the Lord bless you today!

Glynnis

Just a quick post to say that the entry for the She Speaks Scholarship is officially closed.  Thank you for posting your comments and sharing a piece of your life with me.  My heart ached for so many of the women who posted a comment.  God is good, but life is hard.  I'm glad we have each other.

The winner of the scholarship will be announced Monday morning on http://www.proverbs31.org/.   Once I find out who it is, I'll post it here too.

If you don't win this scholarship, I don't want you to think that's a sign from God you aren't supposed to go.  Perhaps God has got another miracle planned for you.  Perhaps He want to bring someone else into this miracle.  Please don't give up.

One way many of our participants get to She Speaks is by raising donations.  This truly is a good investment in advancing the kingdom of God.  Imagine if every woman who attend She Speaks (apprx. 600) goes out and spreads the Gospel to 10 other people.  There are easily 6,000 people who will hear the Good News.  What if they speak to 100 people?  That's 60,000 people who will hear the Good News.

What if each woman writes an article about her testimony and God's faithfulness, and 1,000 people read it? That's 600,000 people who have heard the Good News.

Have I convinced you yet that She Speaks is a good investment in Kingdom work?

We've got a sample letter on our website, and directions for what to do with the donations.  Go to www.shespeaksconference.com. At the bottom left, there is a green button that says “Scholarship Info."  Clink on that link and you'll find the information.

Thank you again for entering.   I believe with all my heart that God will make a way for you to attend if you are supposed to attend.

In His Love,

Glynnis

First, let me say THANK YOU to all the wonderful women who entered this past week's contest for a scholarship to She Speaks.  We had approximately 150 submissions!  We were overjoyed.  A team of P31 Woman editors prayerfully reviewed every submission.  Then we narrowed it down to eight finalists and then one winner.  It was tough.  I cried.  I wanted everyone to win, because I KNEW that each one of you deserves to be at She Speaks.  And I pray that God makes a way for each woman who is supposed to be there.

With that said, I'm happy to annouce that Kelly Soerens is the winner of the scholarship!  Kelly's article, "Grace for Grace's Mom" will also appear in the August issue of the P31 Woman Magazine.

We also had some honorable mentions.  These ladies submitted wonderful articles which will also be published throughout the next year:

Kathy Buchanan
Amber Ford
Sallie Hagen
Tracy Nunes
Joanne Reese
Stephanie Shott
Beverly Van Gorder

By now everyone who submitted an article should have received a personal letter from one of the team.  We felt that was important to show you honor and respect for the effort you made.  Thank you!

If you can believe it, Proverbs 31 is giving away yet another scholarship to She Speaks!  We are having so much fun sharing the generosity of author and mentor Cecil Murphey.  It's thanks to him that we have these scholarships to the conference.   Please send him a note of thanks if you think of it.  Here's a link to his website, "The Man Behind the Words."

Keep reading to discover how to enter.  First a word about the She Speaks Conference itself.

I have the privilege of being on the founding leadership team for the conference.  You know God is up to something when He takes a group of willing, but inexperienced women, and calls them to something much, much bigger than themselves.

That's how God keeps getting all the glory year after year - we know in our own strength and power we couldn't make She Speaks happen.

Most of you know that I'm a writer by training (degree in Journalism from AZ State University) and career (public relations).  However, the first few years at She Speaks I actually had to lead one of the speaking groups.  That was before we had a writer's track.  Each year I begged to not lead a group.  It's not that I didn't like leading the group, or hearing the women speak.  But I stayed up all night filling out the critique forms for each of them.  One year I sat on the toilet (with the lid down) for hours into the middle of the morning so I didn't wake up my roommate.  I agonized, and agonized, over those forms. I wanted to give the best, most helpful feedback I could.

Finally, we had a writer's track, and I was relieved of my speaking duties and could pour myself into what I love.  I have so many great memories of She Speaks.  I've met life-long friends, been inspired by the finest professionals in Christian publishing, and gotten two book contracts.

My favorite times, however, are when I'm meeting with the writers.  I love the critique groups on Friday night where women get to practice giving and receiving constructive feedback.  I love encouraging someone who is nervous about her meeting with a publisher.  I love getting new ideas for ministry from women with far more wisdom and experience than I have.

One great memory was the year I taught a grammar lesson for all the writers.  You have never seen so many women thrilled to learn how to properly use a semi-colon or hyphen.  We were giddy with delight.  THAT'S how you know you are a writer!

But one memory that tops them all, was the year there was another conference being held in the same hotel.  This was way back when we couldn't reserve all the meeting space.  That year, we shared the hotel with the an unusual Miss North Carolina pageant.  The contestants arms and legs looked unusually muscular and by 5 p.m. they had interesting shadows on their chins.  Apparently we were sharing the hotel with men ... dressed as women.

That's enough about She Speaks in the past.  Now that we fill up the conference center, I can promise you there won't be any surprises like that.

Now I want to focus on the She Speaks of the future.  And I hope that includes you!

As I mentioned at the top of this blog, today you have another chance to win a scholarship to She Speaks.  There are only a few rules.  This is for women who have never attended She Speaks and who feel called to speak. And, it is for women who would otherwise not be able to attend. If you can afford the conference – please do not enter to win a scholarship.

To enter, please post a comment today through Friday 4/23 at midnight.  The comment should briefly tell us what winning would mean to you in answering God’s call to speak.

Then on Monday, a winner will be chosen at random and announced on the home page of http://www.proverbs31.org/ some time during the day.

All of the Proverbs 31 speakers are going to be participating in this event today and tomorrow.  To increase your chances of winning, visit all of our blogs and comment.   It's going to be crazy!!!  Insane!!  And more fun than a barrel of monkeys!!   You know, the cute monkeys ... those little spider ones.  Yeah.  More fun than those.  Definitely more fun than sitting on a toilet seat all night and filling out speaking critiques.  (hee, hee)

Here's a list of all my P31 friends who are participating:

Have you ever had a dream?

A dream that you tucked deep in your heart, and were afraid to even speak it?

Every year women come to the Proverbs 31 Ministries She Speaks Conference with just such dreams.  It may be a dream to write, or speak. It may be a dream to lead a women's Bible study, or start a ministry to unwed mothers.

As the director of the writer's track at She Speaks, I meet women every year who are wondering if they have what it takes to write.  They might think the dream is foolish ... because who would read what they have to say?  But the dream beats so hard in their chest they just had to come to the conference.  However, they tenderly protect that dream, even as they put themselves out there for all the world to see.

Is that you?  Do you have a dream to write but haven't taken the first step?  Or have you been writing for awhile but know God is prompting you to take the next step in your writing journey?

Today, I have the privilege of announcing a contest to help someone take that next step of obedience in their dream to write.

Thanks to the generosity of author extraordinaire, Cecil Murphey, I will be giving away one scholarship to attend the She Speaks 2010 Conference, held July 30-August 1 in Concord, North Carolina.   If you haven't heard of Cecil Murphy's amazing newsletters for writers, you'll want to click here to subscribe for free! While you are there, spend some time reading about Cec.  He's coming to the conference and will be speaking to all the writers, and meeting one-on-one for some informal coaching.

And to win it, all you have to do is write an article that would be appropriate for publication in the P31 Woman Magazine.  We'll pick one article as the winner.  In addition to winning the scholarship, we'll also publish that article in the magazine.  Kind of like icing on the best cake you have ever eaten!

We may also select some honorable mentions, and will publish those if we do.

So - how do you win this amazing prize?  Here are the rules for the She Speaks Scholarship Contest:
1.   You must not have attended She Speaks in past years.

2.  Write a 500-1000 word article that would be appropriate for publication in the P31 Woman Magazine.  See the guidelines on the link to the magazine, and see archived feature articles for a sample of our style.

3.  Only enter one (1) article per person.

4.  You can either attach the article in a Word document or include it in the email.  Include a creative title and your name.

5.  Email the article to me at editor@proverbs31.org  on or before Thursday April 15, 2010 at midnight.

6.  If you have a blog, please help us promote the She Speaks Conference by writing about this contest and linking to the She Speaks Conference site.   If you want to post the She Speaks button on your site, feel free to copy it.  But it is not a requirement.

7. The winner of this contest will be awarded a scholarship for the cost of one person’s registration for the 2010 She Speaks conference.

The value of this scholarship is $575 which includes your conference materials, conference registration, 2 nights at the conference hotel and meals associated with the conference. Please note it does not include any travel expenses. Also, you will be assigned a roommate or you have the option to pay the extra charge for a private room. This scholarship is transferable, but only for someone who has not attended the conference.  It cannot be traded for cash.

Your article will be evaluated by the P31 Woman editing team, and we will announce the winner on April 21st.

This is the first year we have scholarships to offer, and we are thanking God and Cecil Murphey for this opportunity.   Please pray about what to submit.  And, if you aren't a writer, please send a note to someone you know who is.

As always, I welcome questions.  Post them on this blog and I'll answer them for all to see.

In His Love,
Glynnis

Hi Friends,

I'm writing today to let you know of an exciting contest I'll be running, starting Monday April 12th.

I have the wonderful pleasure of awarding one scholarship to the Proverbs 31 Ministries She Speaks Conference, held July 30-August 1, 2010 in Concord, North Carolina.  This is a $575 value!!!

The contest will officially start on Monday, but I wanted to let you know about it in advance.  The only requirements are that you submit a 500-1000 word article that would be appropriate for the P31 Woman Magazine, and that you have NOT attended She Speaks in the past.

If this sounds like something you would like to do, then stop back by on Monday for all the details.  But start writing now!

Also, I'd like to congratulate "steffisue".  You were selected to win Mary DeMuth's book.  Please email me privately with your mailing address.   editor@proverbs31.org

In His Love,
Glynnis
