Welcome!  Thank you for stopping by today, as we spend some time talking about training ourselves in godliness.  I'm much more equipped to talk about that type of training than athletic training.

I'm thankful my sons got my husband's genes when it comes to athletics.  If they had mine, their athletic experience would have been limited to tetherball on the 4th grade playground.  I've been told I run worse than a girl.  The one time I got bullied talked into trying out for softball, I got hit on the head during tryouts. Yes, it's that bad.

Thankfully you haven't stopped by my blog today to learn about sports ... hopefully I can share a lesson from sports we can learn without breaking a sweat.  So, welcome if you are visiting after reading my devotion about off-season training.  If you haven't read it, hop over to Proverbs 31 Ministries for a peek.

What I've learned from watching my athletic family, is what you do off-season, significantly affects in-season performance.  If you want to succeed, do your personal best or pin an opponent, your training prepares you for that one moment that makes the difference.

For a Christian, reading God's Word is one of the best ways to train off season.  Here are some of the benefits I've found by training in Scripture:

1)  I recognize the voice of God more readily.  When you read the Bible, you get to know God.  You stop saying things like, "God would never ..."  The only thing I'm convinced of is God would never sin.  Other than that, our God is in the heavens and He does whatever He pleases.  (Psalm 115:3) So when He speaks to me, I'm better equipped to know it's Him because I've heard His voice recorded for generations.

2) I've gotten answers to questions I haven't asked yet.  Here's an example. One thing I learned by reading the Bible is I can know God's will.  I didn't even think it was possible before I read Romans 12:2. It reads:  "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."  That truth gave me confidence to step out in faith.

3) I've made life-changing decisions based on truth in the Bible.  One huge choice I made was to honor my husband in my heart.  In my flesh, I wanted no part of that.  There was some sense of power I retained by harboring dishonoring thoughts.  But then I put two verses together:  Ephesians 5:33 which teaches a wife to respect her husband and Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5:21-22, which says if you are angry, you will be judged the same as if you had murdered.  I understood through those, and other scriptures, that God was looking at my heart just like He's looking at my actions.  It made me do a heart-check in my marriage, and I wasn't looking too good.

Last night, my friend Wendy Blight felt compelled to write a prayer for marriages.  She had no idea I would share this on my blog today.  If want to pray for your marriage, and don't have the words, please visit Wendy's site for a prayer God led her to write.

Of course, I've only touched on the powerful impact of training has when a crisis hits.  Training is the difference between standing firm or falling apart.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this subject.  As I mentioned in the devotion, I'm giving away a copy of the Chronological Bible to someone at random.  All you have to do is identify one truth you’ve learned from the Bible that has helped you stay strong in the tough times.  If you don't have a truth to identify, the just make a comment.  Please leave your email address so I can get in touch with you.  Or check back on Friday when I'll post the winner.

Thanks so much for joining me today.  May the Lord bless you!

In His Love,
Glynnis

One truth that has kept me afloat as my marriage and family is going through hard times is that God will not give me more than I can handle. When I am being faced by a huge obstacle, I pray and tell myself taht God must have full faith in me that I will conquer this mountain.

Off Season training is necessary. I retreived a voicemail on a Friday afternoon after 4:00pm informing me that my mammogram did not come out negative. The Drs. office was closed. I went home, got on my knees and God said to me..Trust God. This is a scripture that I hang onto. Studying and reading are requirements to everything. Thank God everything turned out ok. His scripture put me at peace even when I saw what was in my breast on the XRay.

Often the "way" before me is shrouded in the fog of uncertainty and fear can easily overcome me. It is a great comfort to me to know that as long I am walking in obedience to the Lord, God not only knows my "ways" but He has carved out that "way" just for me - to make me more valuable for His glory and productive for His kingdom work.

One of my life verses is Proverbs 3:5-6...trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding and He will direct my paths. When I am in a hard place, this verse comforts me to know that God is working in my life even if I don't understand.

The truth I know to be true and that gives me the most comfort when going through a trial is remembering that God's plans are greater than my plans and that His ways are higher than my ways. Even when the plans don't make sense to me, remembering that they made sense to Him and are exactly what He has planned I know that whatever it is that has happened is just the way it should be

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." is my favorite verse. I look to it all the time when I feel like bad things are happening around me. My husband passed away suddenly when my children were 3 & 5, he was only 35, had I not trusted God with my future I would not have made it through that dark time.

That has resonated with me through loss of a parent, my early marriage struggles and rejuvenation, job rejections, struggles to accept that I was going to be a stay-at-home mom and put away my ambitions for awhile to wait on God's Word instead and most importantly my submission to God in all circumstances so that I was actually hearing, loving and knowing Him.

God's peace is uniquely described as a river in Isaiah 48:18 and Isaiah 66:12 and that is amazing to me! A river is active, flowing, cleansing, and confident of the diretion it's heading! It doesn't get caught up with the rocks in its path (circumstances of life)...rather it flows around them, all the while smoothing their jagged edges and allowing them to add to their beauty! Each circumstance is an opportunity for the Lord to smooth out our rough edges and grow us to be more like Him! When we are able to remember that goal, circumstances are viewed as these wonderful learning opportunities and a time to grow our relationship with Christ!

Romans 8:28 gets it for me everytime. Even if it wasn't what I wanted or thought I needed at the time, I have grown from it.

I really like this today's devotion because as a new christian, I have been having trouble trying to understand how to remember all the things a christian must do to concentrate on the Lord when times get hard. And a friend told me its like when you were younger and your parents would constantly tell you to get up, get dressed, brush your teeth, comb your hair. When you practice these things repetitively, eventually you get it, you know that's what you have to do when you are on your own. But same thing applies with the Word, when you train off-season, you will know what to do when things do become rocky but you know the truth and have memorized it and practiced it so that you know how to face it.

Never had put it that way, but I know when I lost my little girl that I had to rely on what I already had in my heart, not what I was going to study in my bible at that time...I was too exhausted from grief and comforting my husband and other children to pour over the bible for hours...my "off-season training" is what pulled me through. Thanks for putting a term to it for me. Romans 8:28-39 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him....if God be for us, who can be against us?....neither death, nor life,...nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the LOVE of God that is in Christ Jesus OUR Lord."

I wish I could say that I do this consistently, but thankfully God reminds me when I need to continue to trust Him in difficult times. I know that developing this habit will help me in the long run, but I also have learned many lessons along the way when I wasn't staying disciplined. God has brought me through some situations where it was clear that I needed to be looking up, and trust Him.

The one truth that I have learned is that God is in charge. That his time is different than our time. God can see our future, our struggles, our accomplishments! Where all we can see is today and maybe a glimpse of tomarrow. He knows what is best for us and even in our selfish human way guides us when we want something so bad that it is all we can see. If it is the BEST thing for us then we will get it.I do know that we learn through each and every experience and it is how we turn to God to get us through that makes us stronger. IF IT IS HIS WILL THEN IT WILL BE!! I was speaking to my brother one day on the phone and my brother is pretty far away from God....we were discussing my son and the lifestyle he was living that was pulling him farther and farther away from his dream of being a youth minister when my brother became very quiet and said: You have to have faith that he will end up where he is supposed to be. There was a long pause and then my brother said to me: I dont know why I just said that. I thought to myself.....I DO! I know now that even in my sons darkest times that God is there with him. That he has to go through all of this to get to the place he needs to be.

This was a perfect devotion for today.

5 1/2 years ago, my family and I were "in season," so to speak. Within 6 months, I lost my mother to breast cancer, my grandpa to kidney failure, my step-grandmother to heart failure, my own dad had a heart attack & was diagnosed with Parkinson's, my husband had kidney problems and my 5 year old daughter had unexpected heart surgery. Talk about spiritual bootcamp! There were times when I just layed on the floor, a heaping mess...all I could do was cry. When I thought I couldn't take any more, that is when God picked me up off the floor and set my feet on solid ground. That would not have happened like it did if I had not been in the word.

The Bible helps equip us for the unseen challenges the "opponent" will throw at us...and I promise you, he will throw EVERYTHING he can! But our God is bigger, our God is GREATER!!!

A power scripture that helped me along the way was Hebrews 13:5. "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Yes, the beginning talks about money, but isn't the end where the truth is??? I will NEVER leave you; I will NEVER forsake you! And He won't!!!

I used to wonder why my family went through so much, but gently, I felt God tell me "You don't need to ask why, just rely on me!" There have been so many people that I have been able to minister to through our losses...God helps take the bad and turn it into good! Okay, I will quit rambling now...I just wanted to share what was on my heart and tell you thank you for this devotional.

Isaiah 26:3
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.

My walk with God has been continually definind by that perfect peace that only He can provide in troubling, tough times. As I learn to lean on Him more and me less, the peace comes much more quickly. And at times, the peace is there from the very beginning of a situation because I know He is in control. He is an AMAZING God. I will be forwarding your devotion to my husband, as we were just talking last night about how he can get more into the word and 'talk' to God in troubling times. Your sports analogy may just be the thing he needs in order for it to click a little in his brain. Thank You!

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. This verse came to me 7 years ago when I was really having a hard time in life and was struggling with anxiety also. I have had hard times since but remembering this verse and that God has a plan for good in my life always gets me through the trials and tribulations.

Once when we were in hard times, my husband was out of work and I was working two night jobs with three sons 12 and under, I searched the scriptures looking for "God's Will." I was hoping that somewhere I would find the scripture that would tell my husband how to get a good job so I wouldn't have to work and be so tired all the time. This is what I found:
"Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1Thes5:18.

In thanksgiving is the heart of joy.

The truth I learned during my husband's deployment was "I can do all things through Him who gives me strength" Phil 4:13. The thought of a very long deployment weighed heavily on me. But with Godly friends and a wonderful Bible study to attend - and a weekly babysitter - I was able to make it through and come out stronger on the other side. Thanks to the strength that God provided for me.

I love James 1: 4-6. I used those verses to help me make a difficult decision about a pregnancy. I asked God and He answered through a friend. It was a wonderful confirmation that God cares! I have to admit that it does scare me to do what you asked us to do today, Glynnis. I feel like if I get ready for a storm (practicing in the off-season to be ready for the on), that it is GOING to come. It guess that just shows you how immature my spiritual life is. God help me!! "The Lord will guide you continually..." Isaiah 58:11
I have started this year studying the OT and have been moved by how God's people were blessed when they would ask Him for guidance before proceeding with any plans. When they would neglect to do that, their plans would fail. It has taught me that that is the FIRST thing that I need to do. Ask God to show me what He wants me to do rather than proceeding with my own plans. God will bless us when we consult with Him first. He is the Ultimate Guide, if we would just remember to rely on Him!

Now that I have much of God's word hidden in my heart, when I get discouraged or down on myself, I simply read Psalm 139. The truths there are hard to beat against darkness. There is no dark to Him. I am fearfully & wonderfully made. I can not hide from him. Wherever I go, He is there.

I really enjoyed both of your posts today. Thank you for letting God use you. Interestingly enough, my pastor has been sharing about Spiritual Disciplines at church, and this week was on living in the Word.

One truth I repeat over & over is from Hebrews 11: 35-36. It talks about not throwing away your trust in God but to remember the reward it brings. It also says to have patient endurance to continue to do Gods will to be able to receive what He has promised. My husband & I were not able to conceive children after many many exhausting years of medical procedures. We decided to look into adoption always knowing that was an option for us. Here we are 3 years later with 2 beautiful boys who have blessed our lives in ways we never thought possible! Our first adoption was very long & the birthmother even requested our son back after we had him for 5 months. This news could have broken me & sent me into such a deep depression. Instead I dove into prayer & that verse from Hebrews is what has helped me through. God did bring us through & because of our patient endurance our adoption was successful & now we have just recently completed our 2 adoption. God never goes back on His promises! We thank Him everyday for our family!

I've learned to remember God says that ALL things work to good for those who love the Lord. So, no matter what is happening in my life, I know that God is in control and even though I can't see the "good" that will come out of the situation, God does. After the fact, I usually understand why I went through the trial. Sometimes it is just to bring me closer to God and sometimes it is to be able to help another person down the road.

I was reading a self help book on "how to become the women of his dreams" when inside the book the author talked about putting God first in our lives so I got in my Bible and began to read and found Matthew 6:33. One truth that has really kept me going is that in ALL THINGS, God works for the GOOD of those who love him... (romans 8:28). When we are faced with something that seems unbearable....unreasonable....un-DO-able....I have to REMIND myself that God already knew this was going to happen. He knew it and He allowed it. He is LOVE. He isn't 'loving.' He IS LOVE. And if LOVE allowed this, there's a reason and it is for my benefit. Sometimes I wish we could see everything in hindsight, because that would really help us see what it was that God was up to. But, we don't always see that in the moment. My entire childhood I was told I was worthless and came to believe that to be true. I decided to study scripture and find TRUTH to replace the lies that had been put in my mind my whole life.

I found this:
1 Peter 2:9 (my paraphrase)
“I am a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, part of a holy nation, God’s own special person, that I may proclaim the praises of Him who called me out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

If that's not TRUTH declaring I am WORTHY and NOT worthless, I don't know what is!

I've struggled with clinical depression for years and at a time when I literally was asking God: "WHY am I so messed up? WHY am I like this?!"
That very day, God led me to
1 Corinthians 15:10 "By the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain."

Suddenly, I got it. I am the way I am RIGHT now because it is the way God wants me to be. What peace and freedom I found!

Over the last year I have been asking God to teach me to be a person of "great faith". My studies have led me to hold tightly to Abraham as the Father of Faith. I didn't know then He was preparing me for today. My nephew, who is 22-months old, got out of the house and into the family pool. He is currently on life support and nothing short of a miracle will save him.

The verse that keeps surfacing from my studies is "Yet, he did not waiver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised." (Romans 4:20-21). Abraham never doubted God. In Genesis 15:6, it doesn't say Abraham believed IN God, it says "Abraham BELIEVED God". God has taught me a great lesson in the absence of that little preposition. Abraham knew God had the power to do ANYTHING. His belief was active, tangible. It is one thing to say you believe "in" God but completely different to truly "believe" Him. I think we so often forget that God is STILL cabable of miracles. The only requirement is we believe. "Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid: just believe, and she will be healed." (Mark 8:50)

Thank you for this blog today. The other scripture references have helped me so much today!!

Don't worry about anything, instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and mind as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing, fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right and pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me. Then the God of peace will be with you.

I lean on him daily in prayer and talk to him all the time.
I do sit and listen- "Be still and know that I am God".
Strongest thing I have learned is that he will not put you in any situation if he can not bring you through it.
God is faithful on his terms not ours. Pray daily and thank him for your blessings..

I know that God is Faithful, Faithful, Faithful.I also listen to a Christian tape on worship everyday at work, because I have an office by myself I can sing & praise God as I work. Tithing is
a protection from the enemy, God enables you to do more with the 90%than if you had kept the 100%. My church is in a series called Act Normal, & its about doing what Christ did on this earth. Heal, Help others, paying it forward. We have a web-site that says Have & Need, some post they have a washer, to give, others have I need a car, things of this nature, to make compassion apart of our daily lives. I find when you help others you forget about yourself & problems, & it ends up blessing you more than the help that your are providing for the person in need, (It makes your Soul feel Good). Thank you for your column, & all your daily writings, to help us grow as Christians. May God continue to bless you in your Minstry. Sincerely, Nancy Rogers

After battling secondary infertility for over 2-1/2 years, my husband and I have been recently blessed with a healthy pregnancy. The Bible has taught me so much - tested my faith, encouraged my faith, stretched my faith - but while waiting for this child, I realized the power of prayer. The Bible verse that got me through this chapter in my life was, "I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him." (1 Samuel 1:27).

Psalm 31:7 changed my life, and I have continued to find peace in it when I am weary. "I rejoice in your love because you see my affliction and know the anguish of my soul." * The anguish of my soul.* Those words are so deeply, honestly raw, and to know that God SEES that and KNOWS it is an amazing comfort.

One truth learned from the Bible that has helped me stay strong in the tough times is "He will never leave you nor forsake you." Joshua 1:5. There has been many times when I felt nothing was going right or I could not take another thing or I felt lonely and that scripture always come to mind.

I know that if it wasn't for God I would not be able to face each day with the peace I feel during all the changes happening in our families lives right now. Praise Him!

And we know that ALL things work together for good to those who love God....(Romans 8:28) This is my life verse given to me at the age of 16 by my dad when he was dying with cancer. God has whispered this verse to me so many times since then. And just like God, it is ALWAYS true.

The one Truth that has kept me from melting down with dealing with issues is knowing that "all things happen so that God can be Glorified." Remembering this even when it hurts, destorys and seems impossible, that it's not about me but that it's about God being glorified weather it is right then or later

The truth I constantly remind myself of in hard times is this: Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord. Plans to prosper you, not to harm you." So many times when I thought things were so bad in my marriage, work, & life, I have reminded myself of this promise. He has good for me planned. Prosperity! Not harm, never harm. As long as I truly seek his will, he will never let me down. And I have seen that even when I make mistakes, he can turn those into accomplishments. Amazing God!

" 'For I know the plans I have for you' says the Lord. 'They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.' " Jeremiah 29:11

I loved your devotional today. Its truth rang through my life. I found great comfort when I was going through radiation therapy and I finally turned to God for help. I learned to trust in Him and lean on Him. Several months later I was driving to a nearby city in the wee hours of the morning where my son was attending college. He needed an emergency appendectomy. As he was taken into surgery, I sat alone in an empty hallway (it was 4 a.m.) and felt a sweet peace wash over me as I trusted God that all would be well. THAT's spiritual training.
This Sunday I am participating in a 'disciple panel' to answer children's questions of what being a disciple means to me. I think this idea of spiritual training will be one I will try to share if given the opportunity.
I would love to win the chronological Bible. Another son & I talked about this bible recently and he wants to read it thru together.

One truth I have learned from the Bible that has helped me stay strong in tough times is "fixing my eyes on Jesus...perfecter of my faith" Heb 12:2 and "so we FIX our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" 2 Cor 4:17-18. I have learned not to look at situations because when I do that I will get discouraged and not walk in faith. When I look at the situation I start hearing what the enemy says and I am tempted to open the door to fear, helplessness etc. So I have learned to not "entangle myself with the affairs of this life" 2 Tim 2:3-5 but to believe what is unseen and keep focused on Jesus.

Proverbs 31:30 (KJV) reads, "Favor is deceitful, beauty is vain, but the womans who fears the Lord, she shall be praised". As a not so confident teenager, this verse helped me to focus on what is most important; my relationship with the Lord. I'm leaning on this same verse again today after having two little girls in two years and not feeling like my "old beautiful self". My relationship with the Lord makes me beautiful in his sight and in the sight of others, so that he can get the glory!

There have been times I wanted to fret, worry, be anxious but I am always drawn to the fact that in the scriptures, "do not be anxious for anything..." and Christ is always with me. Sometimes I have to go through those emotions for a time but God is truly working on me in these areas to fully trust and surrender my worries to Him. God is awesome!!!

One truth that has kept me afloat following a layoff and return to restarting a full-time writing business is that my God will provide all my needs according to His riches in Glory in Christ Jesus. After a 14 year break, restarting a business in a depression/recession is incredibly stressful. Once my money resources gave out I have been scrambling to pay bills and survive. Yet I stand firm on God's Promises and He has continued to provide. When afraid, I draw closer to Him and when overwhelmed I move closer to Him. He is my Rock, my Fortress, my Savior. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
